D J Recycling lowering a mini skip onto a bungalow driveway

What does a 6-yard skip cost?

A 6-yard skip costs £180 + VAT for green waste and £250 + VAT for mixed waste. It cannot take soil or hardcore, because a full load would be too heavy to lift safely. Seven days' hire, delivery and tipping are included.

Is a 6-yard skip right for your job?

A 6-yard skip holds roughly 55 to 65 bin bags. It works well for full house clear-outs, larger renovations and garden overhauls with lots of light material. It can't take heavy hardcore or soil, so if your waste is mostly rubble, choose a 2 or 4-yard skip instead. Green waste in a 6-yard is £180 + VAT and mixed waste is £250 + VAT.

Best uses for a 6-yard skip

A 6-yard suits bulky, light waste: a house clear-out of furniture and bags, a large garden clearance, old carpets and flooring or several rooms of renovation waste.

If your waste includes rubble or soil, split it: rubble in a 2 or 4-yard, everything else in the 6-yard.

What should not go in it?

Soil, rubble and hardcore cannot go in this size.

Electrical items, batteries, chemicals, asbestos and some upholstered furniture require separate checks. Consult our skip waste guide and ask us if anything is uncertain. Even a small amount of a banned item cannot go in.

Space for a 6-yard skip

A 6-yard is longer than a 4-yard, so measure your drive before booking and leave room for the lorry to reverse in. Soft lawns and gravel may need boards underneath.

On terraced streets, a 6-yard usually goes on the road with a council licence. In that case we arrange the licence for you.

Real jobs that fit a 6-yard skip

A 6-yard skip is the step up for bigger projects. It holds around 55 to 65 bin bags of mixed waste, enough for a full house clear-out of furniture and bagged items, a large garden clearance or several rooms of renovation waste.

It is a good fit when the waste is bulky rather than heavy. Old furniture, carpets, timber, plasterboard offcuts and garden waste all suit this size. Heavy soil and rubble do not, because they would take the skip over its safe lifting weight, so our 6-yard skips are for general or green waste only.

A 6-yard skip needs a bit more room than the smaller sizes, so measure your drive before you book. If space is tight, two smaller skips or a skip and a collection can work better than one big one.

6-yard skip questions

How many bin bags fit in a 6-yard skip?

Roughly 55 to 65 bags of mixed household waste.

Why can't soil go in a 6-yard skip?

A 6-yard full of soil would be far over the safe lifting weight. Heavy loads must go in a 2 or 4-yard skip.

Is a 6-yard big enough for a house clear-out?

For most two or three-bedroom homes, yes, especially if sofas are collected separately. Mattresses can go in the skip at no extra charge.
