The short answer

Yes. With D J Recycling, mattresses go in your skip at no extra charge. Many skip firms add a fee of around £60 for every mattress, so on a bedroom or house clear-out that difference adds up quickly.

Why other skip firms charge for mattresses

Waste sites have to pull mattresses out of mixed loads so the steel springs, foam and fabric can be separated. Many skip companies pass that cost straight on to you as a per-item fee, often around £60 a mattress.

We handle that sorting ourselves, so it is not added to your bill. Whether it is one mattress or five from a house clearance, the skip price stays the same.

Tips for putting mattresses in a skip

  • Tell us how many mattresses there are when you book, so we can suggest the right skip size.
  • Stand mattresses on their side along one wall of the skip, then load the rest of the waste around them.
  • Keep everything below the top edge of the skip. A level load is safer and legal to carry.
  • Divan bases and wooden bed frames can go in too. Break frames down flat to save space.
  • Sofas, armchairs and other upholstered seating cannot go in. Book a sofa collection for those.

Only got a mattress or two?

If there is nothing else to throw away, a skip is more than you need. Our mattress collection is quicker and cheaper for one or two mattresses. We carry them out from any floor and send them for recycling where possible.

Mattresses in a skip: your questions

Do you charge extra for mattresses in a skip?

No. Mattresses go in our skips free of charge. Just mention them when you book so we can make sure you have the right size.

How much do other skip companies charge for mattresses?

Many add a per-item fee, often around £60 for each mattress, because they pay to have them separated at the waste site. Always ask before you book.

How many mattresses can I put in a skip?

As many as fit below the top of the skip. A double mattress takes up a lot of room, so for several mattresses plus other waste a 6 or 8-yard skip is usually the better choice.

Can I put a sofa in the skip as well?

No. Sofas and other upholstered seating can contain persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and have to be dealt with separately by law. We offer a separate sofa collection.

What is the cheapest way to get rid of one mattress?

If you only have one or two mattresses and nothing else, a mattress collection is usually cheaper than hiring a skip. If you are clearing a room or a house, put them in the skip for free.
